This book talks about research findings on what the world's best managers do differently when it comes to people. Though these practices are known to people, the book supports its views through real life examples and research findings.
According to the book, some of the practices that great managers follow are
- Select a person, set expectations, motivate a person, develop the person
- Understand the peculiar styles of individuals and align them to the role expectations
- Select for behaviors, define the right outcomes, focus on strengths and find the right fit
I agree with the practices suggested by the author with regards to identifying talent and making it work for the organization. If we think about it practically, it is very difficult to change the personality of a human. Instead of trying to fill the gaps in an employee its better to provide a support system to him/her through which he/she can cover up the gaps.
The book also talks about how great managers view behaviors and their role in performance. Its also got questions that relate to employee engagement and retention.
The book really is a must read for all managers.
